And, listen to my weekly conversations with leading experts in all things healthy. I'm here to help you appreciate your most important asset...your health! And remember, it happens one small step at a time.

For 2021, think of a word that represents your vis For 2021, think of a word that represents your vision for the new year as it relates to fitness.

My word for 2021 is... playful.

This is an aspect of fitness we sometimes overlook. Think back to times when the feeling of playful fitness was simply full of so many great adventures. Time passes, though, and fun, carefree days give way to practical, survival-oriented concerns.

Here's a typical scenario I hear, although we each have our own version. You get busy with your career, you get married, you focus on buying a house and making it a home. You’re perpetually short on time, drained of energy; as a result you become less active, perhaps putting on a few pounds, then a few more. Meanwhile, you start developing a repertoire of stress-related symptoms such as stomach pain, back pain, or insomnia.

Before you know it, you can’t get out the door to exercise without your coffee, can’t climb to the top of that little hill to watch the sunset. This is how you start to drift out of playful fitness.

Meanwhile, life marches on. Eventually, kids arrive, you hit problems in your marriage, you worry about your aging parents. Maybe you find yourself, as I did, dealing with a physically or mentally ill family member. Suddenly, you’re a full-service caretaker.

And what happens? That free, playful spirit—that creative energy that used to dance and sing through your arms, your legs, your hips, your smile—begins to fade. Instead of finding expression through your body, it’s trapped there and forgotten.

Does any of this sound familiar? Think about a time when you felt comfortable in your body, and life felt fun and free.  It’s almost as though a line is drawn between that free-spirited, movement and enjoyment of the world . . . and becoming a responsible member of society.

Many of us get to an age where it feels like you go to look up a favorite recipe and find the page missing. And you ask yourself… How did I ever create that energy? Would I ever feel that spark, that aliveness, again?

The answer is… yes, you can.

My intention is to be more playful

Take pride in your midsection, and make it the foc Take pride in your midsection, and make it the focal point of your routine this week. Not just because your abs will look a lot better, but because if your core is unhealthy, it will compromise the health of your entire system.

The core is place where all movement is initiated, and the source of your body’s deepest powers. It’s also the factor that determines whether you move freely and with ease, or whether you’re weighed down by aches and pains. A strong core makes everything easier…each bike ride, run, and walk.

Remember, having flat abs isn’t just about vanity. Extra weight around your tummy triggers greater amounts of inflammation, putting your body at an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes.

A toned midsection is on so many women’s wish-list because of the visual appeal. But, strong abs allow you to do so much more, including…

- Avoid low back pain by keeping you strong and flexible
- Enjoy activities such as tennis, golf, kayaking, and gardening by stabilizing your core and adding power
- Sleep, move and sit more comfortably because of less back pain and stiffness
-  Enhance your stability and balance which makes all activities easier and can help prevent falls
- Reclaim your posture so you move more effortlessly throughout the day and look 10 pounds thinner

Keep your ab routine fresh with this 15-minute workout to fine-tune your midsection. It’s packed with ab-centric moves so your strong abs will be front and center.  Even if you have a strong core, this move will take your routine to a whole new level.

Time for cake...it’s my birthday! I’m ringing Time for cake...it’s my birthday!

I’m ringing in 69 with the same wish I hold for each of us -- vibrancy, vigor and grace throughout the coming year.

One way I celebrate my birthday is to synchronize alarms with my family around the world -- in Malaysia, Portland, and New York City -- and connect via Skype for a virtual gathering and cyber rendition of the birthday song. Guaranteed to fill my heart with joy -- especially trying to harmonize when you have to factor in Zoom sound delays.

Another tradition I look forward to is taking stock of the past year’s events. An undeniable highlight for me has been learning new and invaluable ways to connect with others when we can’t be together in person.

I’ve discovered how important it is to maintain a sense of belonging, of community, of shared purpose, and that -- though maybe not our first choice -- it is possible with the tools we have at our fingertips to nurture relationships of all types. I tend to think of it as essential socializing over distance.

It feels like a lifetime ago that I was celebrating my birthday with all my friends.... in person. Of course, this year will be different, and for good reason.

One way it is different for me, is that I’m nearing the end of a decade, poised to take on the next one with the same enthusiasm and love for life that has brought me here. I believe we’re all connected on this journey and that the connections we make -- whether through family, friends, or communities like ours -- can lend support in how we view aging and, in fact, help change the way we age.

I’m excited by thoughts of what’s ahead and invite you to join me in embracing the changes coming our way, doing all that we can to maintain optimal health and vitality.

I agree with Julia Childs when she said, “A party without cake is just a meeting.” Well, thanks to Chef Michele Leao @healthytablebyus I’m definitely celebrating with cake!

Michele’s Lemon Cake with Cashew Frosting recipe is created with simple and functional ingredients. It’s free of gluten, refined sugars, and it’s almost dairy free (there’s no milk, butter, or cream cheese, but there are a few eggs). Link in bio for recipe!
Just to be perfectly clear… eating a vegan or ve Just to be perfectly clear… eating a vegan or vegetarian diet doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re eating a healthy diet.

There’s an enormous difference between simply eliminating animal products from your meals, and adopting a whole food, plant-based diet.

That’s just one of the topics we’re going to discuss in today's NEW podcast episode with Dr. Joel Kahn, M.D. @DrJKahn

*Link in bio to listen!*

The optimal way to eat still has controversy swirling around it. There are different camps offering conflicting information, and often times it can get muddled, confusing, and emotional.

Joel is a repeat guest on the show, and in this episode he shares the latest science as well and answers some of the questions that listener sent in, including…

• What are the healthiest fats, whether you’re vegan or not?

• Can you be vegan and still in ketosis?

• How can you minimize the impact of the meat on your blood vessels?

Dr. Kahn is one of the world’s top cardiologists who believes that plant-based nutrition is the most powerful source of preventative medicine on the planet. He is the author of The Plant-Based Solution, and sometimes refers to himself as the Top Broccoli in the United States.
