But declining balance should not be accepted as the price tag for aging. By practicing the easy-to-follow, Sock & Shoe Challenge, your balance can be retrained and regained!
Beginning around age 40, our balance starts to deteriorate, impacting both quality of life and longevity. Your eyes, ears, brain and body position provide the sensory circuits which together keep you in balance. But as we age, these systems start to wobble. Without practice, the functioning of our sensors declines, further affecting our equilibrium.
A recent study with 1,700 older adults found that 20% of participants couldn’t balance on one leg for 10 seconds or more! That inability to balance was associated with a two fold risk of death from any cause within 10 years.
If you’re noticing increased instability, here’s a great way to improve your balance from the comfort of your home. No gym membership, no fancy equipment. All you need is a pair of sneakers. It’s that simple!
Sock & Shoe Challenge
Stand barefoot on the floor. Place shoes and socks on the floor in front of you. Balancing on your right leg, extend your left leg behind you as you reach to pick up a sock. Return to an upright position.
Next, raise your left foot and put on your sock. Next, extend your leg and reach for your shoe. Tie your shoe, then return your foot to the floor. Breathe!
Repeat on the other side.
