Is it hot in here, or just my menopause? Earlier this week, we discussed which exercise can reduce hot flashes. But no menopausal conversation would be complete without a discussion of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Tens of millions of women in America now manage their menopause with either ERT (estrogen alone) or HRT (a combination of hormones). They do it for two main reasons: to relieve perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, and to lower their risk of developing osteoporosis and heart disease.

Women’s bodies are all very different; a level of estrogen that’s normal for one might feel horrible to another. However, long-term benefits and risks of HRTare still not fully known. Every week, it seems, new study results make the headlines. It’s difficult even for the medical professional to sort through them—let alone the rest of us.

Nevertheless, especially in the area of long-term health, the stakes are potentially high, and a woman owes it to herself to make an informed decision.
