Tone Up

Before resistance bands were neatly packaged and sold everywhere, fitness required a little creativity. If you wanted to challenge your body in new ways, you experimented. You paid attention. You tried things that simply made sense.

That’s exactly how Tone Up began.

At the time (the early ’80s), I was searching for a way to add resistance. Something simple, portable, and easy on the joints. During a visit to a shipping store, I noticed the big rubber bands used to bundle boxes together. They were thick, stretchy, and surprisingly strong. I brought a few home and started playing with them.

What started as an experiment quickly turned into something more.

Those oversized rubber bands became part of a workout that didn’t just focus on strength, but on movement. Tone Up combined resistance training with cardio, rhythm, and coordination, keeping your body guessing from start to finish. You weren’t locked into one pace or pattern. The workout shifted. It flowed. And before you knew it, your heart rate was up and your muscles were working in ways that felt both challenging and fun.

The cardio sections were designed to wake you up. They added energy, timing, and coordination, asking your brain and body to work together. That mix mattered. It made the workout feel dynamic instead of repetitive, and it helped you build real-world fitness… strength you could use, balance you could rely on, and coordination that carried into everyday movement.

The resistance work added another layer. Using the bands created constant tension, encouraging your muscles to stay engaged while your joints stayed supported. Arms, legs, and core worked together, supported by posture and alignment rather than brute force. You were strengthening your body while staying light on your feet.

What surprised me most was how women responded. Strength training felt approachable. Cardio felt playful. Suddenly, fitness didn’t feel like something you had to push through. It felt like something you could return to again and again.

Looking back, Tone Up was ahead of its time. Today, we talk about functional training, brain-body connection, and workouts that blend strength with movement. But those ideas were already there… built into a workout that started with a few rubber bands and a willingness to try something different.

Tone Up may no longer be in production, but its spirit lives on. The tools may have changed, but the goal remains the same. Keep your body guessing. Move with rhythm. Build strength that supports your life, and most of all, choose workouts that make you want to come back tomorrow.
