In the private Fit Over 40 Facebook group,
women often share their struggles, and certain patterns emerge…

Sleepless nights with hours spent staring at the ceiling.
 Energy that crashes by mid-afternoon.
Stubborn weight that refuses to budge despite consistent workouts.

Sound familiar? Maintaining hormone balance requires ongoing attention. Our bodies speak to us through hormones, and after 50, that conversation gets more complicated. The frustration many of us feel isn’t lack of willpower or commitment… it’s a hormonal conversation we need to learn how to interpret.

The science confirms what we’re experiencing. A 2023 study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology found that metabolic flexibility, which is your body’s ability to switch between burning carbs and burning fat, becomes significantly compromised during perimenopause and beyond, affecting weight, energy, sleep and cognitive function.

“Your body has a choice,” explains Harvard-trained physician Dr. Sara Gottfried Szal in one of our podcast conversations. “It can either burn carbohydrates or it can burn fat. Your body is designed to go back and forth between the two; it’s not designed to stay in one place.”

Most women over 50 get stuck in carb-burning mode, leading to those frustrating symptoms we know too well.

Power of Metabolic Flexability

When I spoke with Dr. Gottfried Szal on the podcast, she explained something that transformed my understanding of hormones and weight. The future of health isn’t about restrictive dieting—it’s about gaining “metabolic flexibility.”

What does this mean? Think of your metabolism like a hybrid car that can seamlessly switch between gas and electric power as needed. Your body should be able to burn carbs when you eat them, then easily transition to burning stored fat when you haven’t eaten for a while.

But for most women over 50, that switch gets stuck.

“Most Americans are not metabolically flexible,” notes Dr. Gottfried. “Only about 12% of us have that capacity to flip back and forth.”

When you gain metabolic flexibility, you experience what Dr. Gottfried calls “food freedom.” You can enjoy meals without cravings driving your choices. You don’t get “hangry” between meals. Your energy stays consistent. Your brain remains sharp.

And yes, maintaining a healthy weight becomes significantly easier.
