Revolutionary Breath

With Patrick McKeown

In our fast-paced world, we often overlook the simplest yet most fundamental aspect of our existence: breathing.

Recently, I’ve discovered a fascinating new class and app called “Breathe to the Beat,” a science-based breath work practice including breath holds that regulates your nervous system and improves focus and emotional flexibility.

My conversation with today’s podcast guest, Patrick McKeown, has always been one of my favorites because we delve into the world of conscious breathing.

Patrick McKeown, author of the international bestseller “The Oxygen Advantage,” has been at the forefront of breathing re-education for the past 15 years. His work, based on the Buteyko method, has helped thousands of people worldwide achieve dramatic results through his breathing techniques. These benefits include:

• Increased focus and mental clarity
• Improved oxygen delivery to tissues
• Enhanced athletic performance
• Reduced breathlessness during exercise
• Better sleep quality
• Increased energy levels
• Aid in weight management

One of the key takeaways from my conversation with Patrick is the significance of nasal breathing. Most people breathe at only 10-20 percent of their full capacity, which greatly decreases respiratory function and energy levels. The nose acts as a reservoir for nitric oxide, an essential gas for maintaining good health. Nasal breathing harnesses the properties of nitric oxide, which plays a crucial role in dilating blood vessels in the lungs, allowing for proper oxygen absorption.

As we age, respiratory health is more important than ever and learning to breathe properly could be a game-changer for your overall well-being.

Patrick introduced me to the concept of the BOLT (Body Oxygen Level Test) score, a simple yet effective way to measure your breathing efficiency. The test involves taking a normal breath in and out, then holding your breath while pinching your nose. You time how long you can hold your breath until you feel the first definite desire to breathe. A score above 25 seconds generally indicates functional breathing, while less than 25 seconds suggests room for improvement.

Remember, every breath counts. By paying attention to this simple yet vital function, you have the power to transform your health and unlock your body’s full potential.
