Today we’re talking bone broth! Bone broth has hit the mainstream recently and it’s being touted from athletes to nutritionists as a superfood. Bone broth bars are actually showing up all over the country! While it might seem new, from the time man discovered fire, they’ve been drinking bone broth. In fact, when I was a kid, we used to take the turkey bones from Thanksgiving dinner and throw it in a pot with carrots, onions, and seasonings – and what we were left with a yummy broth.

Our guest, Dr. Kellyann Petrucci, has all of the details on how best to use bone broth in our own diets. It’s her go-to drink for healing, wellness, anti-aging, and weightloss! Dr. Petrucci is a board-certified naturopathic physician and a certified nutrition consultant. She’s the author of the New York TImes Best-Selling Book, Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet. How did you stumble onto this link between bone broth and its benefits?

I turned 40 years old and I wasn’t getting the results that I used to get. I started to do research and started to experiment with different models and – lo and behold – I stumbled onto this simple solution: bone broth. After I saw positive results on myself, I started to share it with my patients and saw incredible results. I believe it is the best anti-aging tool I’ve ever used! It’s great for fat-burning and erasing the wrinkles. You have to eat fat to burn fat and, luckily, bone broth has the right fat you need. Additionally, bone broth includes collagen which helps keep your skin elastic, plump, and full.

So, the collagen is a key step in keeping your face looking young?

I’m in my 50’s and I’ve never used any kind of touching up or laser facials or anything like that. I was lucky and started eating bone broth at the right time. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t ever undertake any procedures, but I’m saying it’s always better to try and do it naturally. So, I’d suggest starting with bone broth and some facial exercises and see where you get. After you’ve tried it, then you can reassess if you want to try anything else. Do what works best for you!

Talk about the relationship between weight gain and a sick gut. How does bone broth help?

I believe that the number one reason we experience stubborn weight loss is due to inflammation. If you break an arm or get a sore throat, you’ll experience inflammation, but that goes away as you get better. What happens when that inflammation switch gets stuck to the “on” position? That can happen in your gut. There’s 25 feet of tubing inside of your gut and, if they get inflamed, you can see this stubborn weight loss that we’re talking about.

We’re just bags of bugs. There’s all kinds of microbes inside of us and the Europeans understood this concept of a microbiome. The Europeans seem to have healthier guts and it allows them to keep the weight off better than we do. So, we have to be smart, eat properly, and make our guts health!

What’s causing us to disrupt our gut biome?

A lot of medicines throw us off – antibiotics really do a number down there. However, another key contributor is stress. You have to be very aware of your stress levels because that can also have a big impact on your ability to lose weight. Also, we love sugar. When you want something sweet, try to find something unprocessed. You can get some strawberries and some So Delicious whipped cream on top! It’s delicious and it won’t throw off that important biome in your gut.

I love that you talk about walking in your book! Talk a bit about the importance of walking a little bit.

I’m such a firm believer in walking. People ask me how I stay in shape while traveling so much and I just tell them that “I was gifted with two healthy legs”. There’s just so much power in walking! We’re actually designed to move an hour a day – that’s been proven. That includes chasing our kids around, going to the grocery story, all of it – it adds up over time. Make sure you keep moving every day!

Okay. A few years ago a friend and I tried to make some bone broth and it was so complicated and it took forever. Thankfully, you simplify the whole process in your book. Can you talk about lowering costs and simplifying the process?

If you go to your local grocery store and ask them if they have any frozen bones, they usually do. Farmers Markets are my favorite because they’re the healthiest – the healthier animals create healthier bones. You can easily purchase bones for about $4 a pound at places like US Wellness Meats, Whole Foods, Costco, and your local grocery store.

The easiest way to do this is just to get a whole chicken carcass. It’s that simple. You can either get a cooked chicken and take the meat off OR you can get an uncooked chicken, cook the meat, then grab the bones. If you want some flavor in your bone broth, you just put some veggies in there (carrots, celery, onion) – I’m a big fan of seasoning with lemongrass. You cover it with about one inch of water and you put it in a stock pot or a slow cooker and just let it simmer (12-18 hours for beef and 6-12 hours for chicken). That’s it!

Can I buy bone broth at the store?

Most places carry something in a carton, but it’s just not gelatinous enough to give you the benefits. Obviously, it’s not bad for you, but just be aware of what you’re looking for.

What I really love about bone broth is the benefits it can provide your joints.

It is found that the #1 complain in any doctor’s office is joint pain. Luckily, bone broth has the nutrients to help soothe and heal joint pain – Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers use it to help. If you have joint pain, don’t wait another minute! Bone broth is a very powerful anti-inflammatory.

The three most important changes you can make to live a happier, healthy life: You have to have a happy gut, you have to keep that inflammation down, and you have to become a natural fat burner. When you have your body functioning like that, then you’ll feel the difference! There’s a difference between “living” and “really living”.

How can people find out more about you?

My website is www.drkellyann.com. My book is Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet and my next book is Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet.

If you’re looking for ways to incorporate more bone broth into your diet, you can always use bone broth instead of water in all kinds of dishes. You can use broth instead of water when you’re cooking veggies or quinua; and you can use broth instead of milk when making mashed potatoes. I even put them into my scrambled eggs in the morning! Just be creative!

You can make your own or you can order it online. Check out www.petespaleo.com if you want to give it a try first.
