Q&A: “I’m Too Busy To Exercise”

If I were to ask you, “What’s the number one reason why you’re not exercising consistently?” You’d probably tell me that you just don’t have enough time! I’ve learned that even the busiest person can fit a fitness routine into their schedule by incorporating one of these five tips:
Make it a non-negotiable
You don’t get up in the morning wonder, “Should I brush my teeth or not?” You just get up and do it! The reason it’s so easy to clean your pearly whites every day is because you have a specified time throughout the day, and you’ve made it a habit.
It’s the same for fitness. Try scheduling in your workout before you get in the shower, on your lunch break, or immediately after work. Eliminate excuses by having your workout gear ready to go…either in the back of your car or on the side of your bed. After practicing this routine every day, it will become so second nature that it will be easy to check off your to-do list.
Break it up into manageable sizes
Instead of trying to fit in a 30-minute workout, break it up into small chunks of activity throughout the day. This way, you can workout for 10 minutes when you wake up, 10 minutes in the afternoon, and 10 minutes in the evening. Studies show that longer workouts may not be better…in fact, splitting up your routine may actually be more beneficial. The idea is to practice consistency and maintain activity throughout the day!
Fit your family into your schedule
Many times, we have the excuse that our kids, grandkids or pets are keeping us from working out….so take them with you! Next time you’re at the park together, try some pull ups on the monkey bars or do a few lunges in the grass.
Or, when you take the dog for a walk, pause to do some calf raises on the lip of the sidewalk or tricep dips on a park bench.
Use your TV
Watching your favorite show doesn’t mean you have to sit in front of the television! During the commercial breaks, do some crunches on the ground, or see how many jumping jacks you can complete before the show starts again. I love walking in place while watching the evening news to get my heart rate up! The idea is to keep moving throughout the show.
Workout at work
It may sound funny, but it works. Simply keep dumbbells or a stretchy band underneath your desk, and take a five minute break a few times throughout the day for some bicep curls or tricep extensions. Doing this will not only help you fit exercise into your day, but it will also bring your energy levels up!
